Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

In July of 2020, representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Congress women  for New your Bronx district 14 delivered a speech to the US congress regarding the comments shared by representative Yoho. Alexandria also known as AOC, is a very well educated, strongly appointed, and an advocate not only for equality but for women’s rights as well. In this speech AOC goes on to express in depth how not only Representitive Yohos comments about a women are said but no matter the position and authority you hold , behavior shown by him is seen all across the US towards women. For example she says, “These were the words that Representative Yoho levied against a congresswoman. The congresswoman that not only represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, but every congresswoman and every woman in this country. Because all of us have had to deal with this in some form, some way, some shape, at some point in our lives.” While this could’ve been handled and responded to privately , AOC uses this opportunity to express and advocate for herself and her audience that “enough is enough”.

Alexandria Ocarsio-cortez is a respected congresswomen that thrives to show her audience that she is not only a women all about business but is true to her word. For example, she goes to say, “I took a few steps ahead and I walked inside and cast my vote. Because my constituents send me here each and every day to fight for them and to make sure that they are able to keep a roof over their head, that they’re able to feed their families and that they’re able to carry their lives with dignity.” While not only shining light on her encounter with representative Yoho, she will persevere and stay confident with challenges she faces and not react in weakness.

Mike Speech

Rapper Killer Mike’s Speech during Atlanta presented a message to the community and protesters of racial injustice. Killer Mike message was given to bring awareness to the injustice the black community has suffered and to call for a change, while calling for change he focused on not only encouraging the people from Atlanta but people in America to take peaceful action. Mike said “Now is the time to plot, plan, strategize, mobilize.” in response to all the brutal rioting and building damage going on He is encouraging others to acknowledge what is happening currently so before doing and make sure they are approaching the situation to try not and only react in emotion but logically with a plan. Mike towards the end of his speech said “I want you to go home. I want you to talk to 10 of your friends. I want you guys to come up with real solutions.” when Mike is speaking he is motivating peaceful and smart actions and while not agreeing with violent actions people take he is not against the protest people take part in. Mike maintained a message in this speech that was calling for a change and awareness. “We need a review board here because we need to get ahead of it before an officer does some stupid shit. We need to get ahead of it. That’s my recommendation to my mayor and my chief. Let’s get a review board. Let’s get ahead of it, and let’s give them power.” Mike was able to portray the importance, urgency and violence of George Floyd’s case was by giving examples of how this horrid event took place, “He casually put his knee on a human being’s neck for nine minutes as he died like a zebra in the clutch of a lion’s jaw. And, we watch it like murder porn over and over again.” mike words this in a way that can change a persons perspective. It’s eye-opening to him but to anyone no matter if you are Person of color.

1st Six Weeks Reflection

Reflecting on my first virtual six weeks I’m not very proud of how it started. When it came to having problems with technical difficulties or not being able to understand how something worked I gave up. When i needed help, I refused to ask for it and that is my biggest regret this six weeks because although it seems small and like one problem , it was the origin to all of my problems. I look forward to this next six weeks , I’ve done a lot of personal evaluations and thinking of ways I can improve in all my classes but here is how I will improve in this class. I’ve come up with a routine of trying to space my reading time out into my daily routine rather than it strictly only being the first 10 minutes of class. Growing more as a reader has become a important ideal for me because I see the many pros in doing so for example , it improves the speed I can read  , my vocabulary and even my writing. All of which will dramatically help me in the future. I love writing and my favorite style of writing is poetry, but I do notice I am a bit weak as a writer when it comes to essays, the word itself I feel makes my mind go blank and I really just want to get use to the structure and style of writing because I know that will be the most common thing I’ll write in the future.

Sincerely,

Ariana Arechiga

Assertion

Written In the prologue “There, there” by Tommy Orange, his main message dipicts the different hardships Native Americans had to go through to inform the people today about Native American history because many people know about the victories and accomplishments from the colonizers but not the mistreatment and defeat of the Native Americans. For example, Tommy Orange writes, “In 1637, anywhere from four to seven hundred Pequot were gathered for their annual green corn dance. Colonists surrounded the Pequot village, set it on fire, and shot any Pequot who tried to escape. The next day the Massachusetts Bay Colony had a feast in celebration, and the governor declared it a day of thanksgiving. (Orange 1) On May 26, 1637, the Pequot massacre started. Many native Americans were massacred during this time due to the conflicts between the Puritans of Massachusetts and the Pequot’s. The conflicts started to rise as the Puritans started to expand more into Connecticut. The end result of this conflict portrays one of the violent massacres that the Native Americans experienced. “At Sand Creek, we heard it said that they mowed us down with their howitzers. Volunteer militia under Colonel John Chivington came to kill us, we were mostly women, children, and elders.” (Orange 3) The Sand Creek massacre happened on November 29, 1864. Native American groups (The Cheyenne and Aparo) were attacked by the United States Army which was led by Colonel John Chivington. The Sand Creek Massacre was caused due to the desire of wanting to gain control of the Great Plains of eastern Colorado. the author speaks out about Sand Creek Massacre which informs the reader about one of the trauma Native Americans went through and how it lingers on through Native American history. I uphold that the author’s message is to portray the violence and trauma that the Native Americans had to go through because of the depth in detail the author goes into speaking about the life changing events The natives had to endure like the Mystic and Sand Creek Massacres which were main hardships Native Americans had to face.

My dearest Friend

These days just seem to be getting longer

life has slowed down and time has yet to pass

all the memories all the feelings

are in shades of black

known and will forever always be

the best part of me

may you rest

in a world that is still unknown

may you still be my forever home.

Rico

oh what will I do

when I have to look at the sky in search of you

Time is not our friend

Time is come close to an end

poetry Annotation

Then

BY RODDY LUMSDENFor the first time, I listen to a lost
and secret recording of us
making love near-on ten years ago.

I recognize your voice, your sounds,
though if I knew no better,
I could be any man in any room.

After, the rising sounds of rising
and of dressing and once
as you step up close to the deck,

perhaps to pick up shoes, you sing
the chorus of Sunday Morning.
I call on you to hurry and we leave.

It does not end then; the tape rolls on.
A few late cars which sigh by
might have passed us walking away

triumphant, unaware we’ve left behind
this mop and mow mechanism
of silence to which we may never return.

The poet in the poem makes a effort to describe love in a way that is missing someone , i like how they express in the last stanza “unaware of what we’ve left behind this mop and mow mechanism of silence to which we may never return”
